My name is James Lynas. I was born in Belfast where I still live. I first started listening to Country music at about 6 or 7 years old. By the time I was 8 I was singing at house parties for family and friends.
My main influences would have been and still are Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Johnny Cash, George Strait, Elvis Presley, Buck Owens. My first appearance on the music scene was as an Elvis Tribute Artist when I was 17. I realised I could impersonate Elvis and was spotted in a local bar by a local entertainer who took me under his wing. Before I had an 11 piece band behind me doing some big shows round Northern Ireland. However, it didn’t feel right to me dressing in the jump suites and dying my hair. By the time I was 20 I gave it up. I then started my own band playing covers on the local club scene. This lasted for a while but my heart wasn’t in it as I really wanted to sing real Country music. At that time Country music wasn’t cool so I gave up singing.
It wasn’t until I was in my 30s that I decided to make a video singing Keith Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes” and sent it to the Phil Mac Country Show on Sky TV hoping they would show it which they did. From that day things started happening. John Cole, a well known songwriter from the USA who saw the show, contacted me and offered the song “Bottle Top Bars and Moonlight Ladies”. I recorded the song and had a video made which has been shown many times on the Keep It Country Channel’s various programmes. Following that, writer Jon Philibert, who wrote “I’ve Been Rained On Too” which became a top ten record for Tom Jones in 1984, offered me the song “She Don’t Look That Lonely To Me” which I recorded and which hit number one in July 2016 on the European Country charts. I have recorded a few more of Jon Philibert’s songs recently and they have all been heard across the globe.
All my music is done in my spare time. I still hold down a 45 hour week day job to support my family of 4 young children and my partner Victoria. Hopefully, the next few years I will be recording more quality songs and see how things progress.
